Top children’s authors, Liz Pichon and Tom Palmer, bring literacy to life at the Reading Matters’ conference
We held our annual
literacy conference on the 9th of July, at The Holiday Inn in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. A big thank you to all our wonderful speakers, workshop facilitators, exhibitors and delegates for making the event such a success.
Delegates were treated to a varied and engaging line-up of speakers including award-winning authors, Liz Pichon and Tom Palmer, and Mairi Kidd of Barrington Stoke, Ryan Pritchard of Artis, Rob Smith of The Literacy Shed, Alan Heath of Learning Solutions and Rachel Kelly of Reading Matters. Some of these presentations are now available to view on the Reading Matters website.
Also, we had the pleasure of listening to some Reading Leaders and their partners from All Saints Catholic College in Huddersfield who came and explained to us, in their own words, how Reading Matters has made a positive difference to their experience of reading.
The conference looked at the latest ways of ‘Bringing Literacy to Life’ for children and young people; encouraging them to read, improving their reading skills and develop a love of reading. Around 130 people, including teachers, librarians and early years experts attended, some from as far afield as London!
The feedback has been great, with comments including; “A really valuable event, thank you!” “A great day – just the tonic I needed at the end of a busy school year”. “Very enjoyable with lots of useful ideas”.

New Reading Matters’ Fink Cards launched at the conference
We are delighted with our new conversation cards, developed in conjunction with
Fink, that launched at the conference last week. Fink (Family Interaction Nutures Kids) was founded in September 2008 by mother of four, Lisa Warner, as a simple conversation card game, to stop her children arguing at mealtimes! The Reading Matters Fink cards are designed to generate stimulating conversations about reading, books and many other things.
Happy Reading!
