Bringing Literacy to Life at the Reading Matters Conference

Plans are now in full-swing for our nextliteracy conference, to be held on the 9th of July in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, with the theme Bringing Literacy to Life. Several key speakers have already confirmed and we are delighted to announce that one of them is the extremely popular children’s author, Tom Palmer. Tom, whose books are written mainly on a sporting theme, has produced 3 children’s fictional series for Puffin; Football Academy, Foul Play and The Squad and has recently released the new Rugby Academy series, which promises to be a hit just ahead of the rugby world cup.

Other confirmed speakers are Mairi Kidd, Managing Director of Barrington Stoke, Rob Smith the Director of the Literacy Shed, an organisation that provides teachers with ideas for literacy teaching using film and animated resources and The Conservation Volunteers who will show us how to incorporate the outdoors as a stimulus for literacy development.

Booking is now open and can be booked through our website. Take advantage of the early bird rate of £90 per delegate for bookings made before 26 March 2015.

Fundraising Gala Dinner

Don’t forget to book your place at the 3rd Reading Matters Fundraising Gala Dinner on Saturday 25th of April. It promises to be another fun-filled evening as we look forward to the company of the wonderful Gervase Phinn and the talented local band Issimo, for those who like to step out on the dance floor! Last year we raised a magnificent £12,000 to improve young people’s reading skills – please come and help us do even better this year!

New Member of the Team

Reading Matters warmly welcomes a new member to our team. Rachel Owens joined us at the beginning of February as the Reading Support Trainer. Rachel’s background is in education and child care and therefore she has a solid understanding of how vital our services are and how best to deliver them. We hope that you will enjoy working at Reading Matters, Rachel!

We’ve moved offices!

Reading Matters moved into a more spacious office at the Yorkshire Water site on Halifax Road during January. Our contact details remain the same, as we have relocated only about 50 yards down the corridor, but the change makes a very positive impact to our working environment. We would like to sincerely thank Yorkshire Water for their continued, essential support.

Happy reading!
From the team at Reading Matters
