Reading Matters in 2016

We know that it’s going to be a brilliant 2016! Don’t forget that we are here to help children and young people who find reading difficult to catch up quickly and reach their potential.

This year we will continue to train and manage our own dedicated Reading Mentors to work in schools throughout Yorkshire and also to train schools’ own mentors to provide vital support with reading. Our professional trainers will be visiting schools nationwide to deliver Reading Leaders training to peer mentors and ensure they have the skills needed to best support younger pupils with reading development. We will also be around the country delivering CPD training for school staff and providing parents and carers with simple strategies to improve literacy skills at home.

Please put these key dates for 2016 in your diaryThe Reading Matters’ Fundraising Gala Dinner will take place on Saturday the 14th of May at The Midland Hotel in Bradford and The Reading Matters’ Literacy Conference will be held on Thursday the 30th of June at The Holiday Inn in Brighouse.

Sentamu Academy Learning Trust invests in one to one support to raise standards in its primary schools

Sentamu Academy Learning Trust (SALT) in East Hull is working in partnership with Reading Matters to raise reading standards in its primary schools. The Academy Trust, which is responsible overall for five schools; three primaries, one secondary and a pupil referral unit, has enlisted Reading Matters’ help to boost the reading ability of children that find reading a challenge. Parents and friends of the three primary schools have been trained to be the school’s own Reading Mentors and support children in its schools; Newland St Johns, Stockwell and St James’ Primary. Reading Matters has also trained Reading Leaders from Year 5 in each of the primary schools who will provide one to one support to younger pupils in school, a scheme which benefits both children in the partnership.  Jane Daniels, Head Teacher at St James’ CE Academy said “We know that reading can take our pupils on a journey into another world; it develops their imagination, their vocabulary and their ability to write wonderful stories. We want all of our pupils to develop a love of reading, to become avid readers, and working with Reading Matters is helping us to achieve this.”

The Freemasons’ Grand Master’s Provincial Fund has generously provided two Bradford secondary schools with Reading Matters’ resource boxes worth £500 each this week.  Dixons Trinity Academy and Thornton Grammar schools were both selected to receive the resources to encourage reading for pleasure among children who struggle with reading in the lower years of the school. Rob Browning, Head Teacher of Thornton Grammar said “We are very grateful to receive these fantastic resources to help and encourage our young people”.
