North Lincolnshire Leads The Way With Reading Support
Reading Matters are delighted to be working in partnership with the North Lincolnshire Local Education Authority on a drive to improve literacy skills in their schools.
Over the last few weeks, we have trained around 130 brilliant young Reading Leaders in primary schools in North Lincolnshire. Work will continue in January with the training of more Reading Leaders in secondary schools and of adult volunteer Reading Mentors from the local communities.
Reading Leaders are older pupils who volunteer to be positive reading role models in schools and help younger children with their reading development. Reading Matters delivers a one-day interactive training course which ensures these peer mentors can provide the most effective and motivating reading support for their partners. In secondary schools Reading Leaders can also obtain a level 2 accreditation.
The new Reading Leaders are raring to go after their training days. One commented, “I really enjoyed learning how to help the younger kids and I can’t wait to start!”
Conversation Counts
With the days getting ever shorter and the temperatures becoming increasingly uncomfortable outside, now is the time of year that we’re spending more time indoors. Take advantage of this time to engage in conversation, play games, share books and tell stories to children, as it’s proven that all these things have a positive effect on literacy development.
Reading Matters’ own fantastic conversation cards, designed to stimulate interesting conversations with children and young people, are now available to buy for £14.99.Please click here for more information.
BBC Launches ‘Get Reading’ Campaign
This week the BBC have launched an important campaign entitled ‘Get Reading’ aimed at enthusing the nation about books and encouraging reading for pleasure. It is recognised that reading for pleasure is more important to a child’s development than education or social class (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development 2002).
The campaign will start in Spring 2016 with a Shakespeare festival, celebrating his enormous legacy to literature on the 400th anniversary of his death.
There will also be an exciting, children’s books season, which will include a major BBC2 documentary about the life and work of Roald Dahl and a BBC4 film following a group of primary school children as they learn to read.
Tony Hall, the Director-General of the BBC said, “we want to get everyone talking about stories that have influenced them – and inspire them to discover something new. Let’s not forget, a book can change your ideas. It can change your life”.
