Reading Matters Goes Global!

Reading Matters was delighted to be invited to train peer mentors as Reading Leadersat The International School of The Hague in the Netherlands last week.

The school has students with a wide variety of nationalities and first languages and is confident that the Reading Leaders will be able to raise reading attainment and enjoyment among those primary pupils that are currently less confident with English.

The feedback has been excellent from both the staff and students. One student said “Thank you for coming all this way to train us, I really appreciate it and enjoyed learning how to judge my reading partner’s reading level”. Another added, “I really learned a lot and I am looking forward to working with a younger student”.

Running For Reading Matters

Our Chief Executive, Rachel Kelly, will be running the 10k Abbey Dash in Leeds on the 15th of November to fundraise for Reading Matters. Rachel has recently taken up running as a hobby and this will be her first 10k race. Please follow this link if you’d like to show your support.

Barrington Stoke launches TINTS

Award-winning publisher of accessible fiction and friend of Reading Matters, Barrington Stoke has launched TINTS, a dyslexia-friendly reading app. TINTS is designed to break down the barriers that can stop children succeed in reading, in particular dyslexia and visual stress.

TINTS replicates and builds on the features of the print books to allow young people to read a selection of books by best-selling authors on screen. There are many special features to help dyslexic readers including the opportunity to change the background colour of the page and a specially designed font to tackle visual perceptive issues.

TINTS is now available from the App Store to download for free for iPad users and an Android version will follow in spring 2016. It includes previews of all the books available (priced at £5.99 or £6.99) and lots of other useful content. The books available to read in the app each have an ‘interest age’ and a ‘reading age’ and include titles by Malorie Blackman and Tom Palmer, who spoke at our conference in July.
