Did you know that you can easily support Reading Matters at no additional cost to you?

We have found a great way to raise money for free, simply by shopping online through a website called easyfundraising www.easyfundraising.org.uk

Whenever you buy anything online (e.g. presents, groceries, clothes, books, flights, hotel rooms, etc.) you can raise a free donation for Reading Matters. There are over 2,700 retailers registered with the site, including Amazon, John Lewis, eBay and Tesco who will donate a percentage of what you spend to Reading Matters to say thank you for shopping with them.

Here’s how it works:

1. Sign up – go to http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/readingmatters and click on the button to sign up.

2. Shop – from the easyfundraising website, search for the retailer you’d like to shop with and click through to the retailer to make your purchase. This tells the retailer you came from easyfundraising. The price is exactly the same as if you’d visited the retailer directly.

3. Get a donation – after you’ve made your purchase, the retailer will give you a cash reward that easyfundraising turn into a donation for Reading Matters.

No cost, no catch!

Please be assured that using the easyfundraising website will not cost you a penny. There are no catches or hidden charges and Reading Matters benefit from any donations you make once registered. Also once you are registered, if you choose to download the easyfundrasing app, you will be automatically notified when you visit a retailer’s website that is affiliated to the scheme.

Thank you for your support.

Play in the 21st Century

Christmas always makes me think of my own children’s excited faces and this brought to mind this report published by Eureka, the National Children’s Museum, on play in the 21st century. Key findings include:

·         81% of children prefer to play outside as opposed to watching TV

·         67% of children have a preference for making up their own games

·         59% of children don’t play beyond their own garden alone

·         33% of adults believe risks in play benefit their child

·         Significant changes in where children prefer to play compared with where their parents played as children, with a clear reduction in play on the street and in the wider countryside

Long-term vocabulary benefits from ‘reading for pleasure’ in childhood

Following my last email on reading for pleasure, I came across this researchcarried out by the Institute of Education (IOE). Reading for pleasure during childhood has a substantial influence on a person’s vocabulary 30 years later. Researchers have reached this conclusion after studying the vocabulary test scores of more than 9,400 British people at the ages of 10, 16 and 42.

So let’s fill those Christmas stockings with books! (Bought via easyfundraisingand clicking to donate to Reading Matters of course!)

Best wishes to all,

Rachel Kelly, Chief Executive, Reading Matters
