Reading Matters reaches out to businesses

We are appealing directly to businesses in an effort to help us reach more young people who are struggling with reading and literacy. Intervention will have a positive effect on exam grades and employability making it directly relevant to companies.

Chief Executive, Rachel Kelly, says: “Just ten weeks of 1 hour’s intervention can raise a student’s reading age by 15 months on average and, in some cases, by up to four years. This can have a huge impact on the young person’s future prospects and teachers also report improvements in student engagement, confidence, performance and behaviour. Business leaders often comment about the lack of literacy skills among current school leavers; we are tackling this problem and, with corporate support, we can achieve even more positive outcomes.”

The corporate partnership initiative aims to engage businesses in our social mission by informing them about the issues and encouraging them to provide financial and practical support. First and foremost we want to raise awareness within the business community and show them how they can get involved. Employees can volunteer as Reading Matters Reading Mentors in local schools and firms can provide services in kind, fundraise, make regular contributions to support our work or choose to sponsor Reading Mentors or Reading Leaders courses in their local community.

We are launching our corporate partnership initiative at the Buy Yorkshire conference at the Royal Armouries, Leeds, on May 13 and 14. We are on stand 116, maybe see you there! In the meantime, please feel free to get in touch if you would like to find out more – 01274 692219 or info@readingmatters.org.uk
