The Department for Work and Pensions has published figures on the benefit cap since its introduction on 15th April 2013. Key findings include:
- Nearly two in three households (59%) affected by the government’s benefit cap were made up of a single parent with child dependants
- 39% of households capped had 5 or more children
- Almost 33,000 households had their housing benefit capped
- 47% of households affected by benefit cap were found in London
Our work with parents and carers can have a really positive effect on the literacy skills of the children in their care. At a recent ‘Reading Together’ workshop with male foster carers in Bradford, one commented that in the past he hadn’t thought about reading with the children as being ‘his job’, he now has lots suggestions and recommendations to make reading fun and is looking forward to trying out some new ideas!
