Early Behaviour and Attainment
As thousands of 16-year-olds found out their GCSE results in August, new research has found that three-year-olds who display hyperactivity, inattention or conduct problems are at risk of worse academic outcomes when GCSEs come around. Research from the Universities of Nottingham and Bristol surveying over 11,000 children has linked early behavioural problems to lower GCSE grades.
Key findings include:
- 3 year old boys displaying hyperactivity, inattention or conduct problems were found to be 33% more likely to not achieve a minimum level of 5 good GCSE grades (A*- C) at 16
- The effect of conduct problems on educational achievement was comparable in girls to boys
- Teachers, health professionals and parents should be made more aware of the long-term implications of early behavioural difficulties
