Here at Reading Matters, we hosted a wonderful celebration event for our fantastic volunteer Reading Mentors. Held on 6 June 2013 at the splendid Midland Hotel in Bradford, our volunteers were treated to a selection of delicious cakes and coffee and were thanked by Reading Matters’ Chief Executive Rachel Kelly and Reading Mentor Service Manager, Christine Elliott. They were given an open invitation to the forthcoming Reading Matters Conference ‘Literacy Learning Together’ on the 8th July to further develop their skills. The volunteers watched the recently produced film which highlights the fantastic work of Reading Matters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti03kkSngaU.
The volunteer Reading Mentors also collected new resources to use in their partnership sessions and were presented with long service certificates ranging from 1 to 15 years! One volunteer Chris Lythe, spoke to the assembled audience about what it means to her to be part of Reading Matters, and Dave Forest, Head of Volunteering Bradford, was passionate in his presentation on what volunteering brings to our community.
It was a uplifting and motivating session and everyone left determined to carry on with their fantastic support for struggling and reluctant readers, to improve their skills and change lives and motivate young people to reach their potential by becoming confident and enthusiastic readers.
